7K-L1/13L Mission to Earth's Moon

Goals: This was the Soviets' sixth attempt to send an unmanned spacecraft around the Moon and back to Earth.

Accomplishments: None. Malfunctions of the second- and third-stage engines prevented the spacecraft from launching properly.

This was part of a continuing effort to get the Soviet manned lunar program off the ground.

A fuel system breakdown caused premature engine shutdown.

The misison payload landed near the border between the USSR and Mongolia.
