Asteroid Redirect Mission (ARM) Mission to Asteroids

Goals: This mission is a concept under study by NASA that would - for the first time - capture and relocate a 7-10 meter diameter, ~500,000-kg Near Earth Asteroid (NEA) to high lunar orbit. The capture, transportation, examination and dissection of an entire NEA would provide valuable information for planetary defense and a unique, meaningful and affordable destination for future robotic and human exploration.

Accomplishments: This mission is still in the conceptual phase.

ARM Facts A viable asteroid would be up to 7-10 m (23-33 foot) in diameter and weigh about 500,000 kg (1.1 million pounds).

Space visionary Konstantin Tsiolkovsky (right) first proposed the concept more than a century ago in "The Exploration of Cosmic Space by Means of Reaction Motors."

The technology necessary to make the mission possible is just now becoming available. Identifying smaller asteroids is now possible and there are engines powerful enough to move it through space.
