Pioneer 8 Mission to Our Solar System

Goals: Pioneer 8 was the third in a series of solar orbiters designed to measure interplanetary phenomena such as the Sun's magnetic field, the solar wind, and solar and galactic cosmic rays from widely separated points in space on a continuing basis.

Accomplishments: Pioneers 6, 7, 8, and 9 formed a ring of solar-weather stations, spaced approximately along Earth's orbit, whose measurements were used to predict solar storms. Like Pioneer 7, Pioneer 8 studied Earth's magnetic tail in detail.

Controllers intermittently maintained contact with Pioneer 8 for more than three decades.

Originally designed to operate in space for at least 6 months, the Pioneers lasted for decades.
