7K-LOK/6A Mission to Earth's Moon

Goals: This spacecraft was to orbit the Moon for nearly four days, taking pictures of potential landing sites for future piloted missions.

Accomplishments: None. The launch vehicle exploded, ending Soviet plans to send cosmonauts to the Moon.

This was the last of four unsuccessful attempts to use the giant launch vehicle the Soviets had hoped would send cosmonauts to the Moon.

The spacecraft was destroyed by a powerful explosion 107 seconds after launch.

The cause of the explosion was never determined.
