Goals: This was the second in a series of more advanced unmanned lander the Soviet Union designed to drill into the lunar surface, collect samples and return them to Earth.

Accomplishtments: None. A malfunction in the final stage of the booster rocket caused the spacecraft to burn up in Earth's atmosphere without reaching orbit.
