Ye-3/2 Mission to Earth's Moon

Goals: Like Luna 3 and its unsuccessful follow-up mission, this Soviet spacecraft was designed to photograph the far side of the Moon and gather data on interplanetary space.

Accomplishments: None. The launch vehicle broke apart 10 seconds after launch, scattering debris around the launch site. Explosions shattered many nearby windows.

Ye-3/2 Facts This was the last of the first-generation Soviet Moon probes.

It was the USSR's 9th attempt to explore interplanetary space; and the 17th interplanetary mission since the space age began in 1957.

The Soviets also made the first launch for Mars in 1960.
