NEW ORLEANS (February 21, 2002) - "Brave New Girls," also known as "Cady's Song" is a song Teresa, a singer/songwriter from Nashville, co-wrote for friend, NASA astronaut Catherine "Cady" Coleman. It's just one of the songs from the same named album she plans to share with several thousand brave new Girl...Scouts at the Girl Scouts' 90th Birthday Celebration being held Sunday, March 10, at the Kiefer UNO Lakefront Arena. What makes the celebration even more memorable for the Girl Scouts attending is the fact that Coleman has also agreed to come and participate in the event.

"I heard Teresa perform in Nashville last spring, and was struck at the instant rapport she had with her audience. She's very talented, and it was inspiring to hear how her friend Cady pursued her dream of becoming an astronaut. It's a dream come true that they've both agreed to join us here in New Orleans for our birthday," said Marianne Burdette, director of communications at the Girl Scout Council of Southeast Louisiana.

It's especially appropriate, says Deb Graham, program development director at the Council, since the Council is launching a new science program in the fall to help girls build the skills and confidence they need to explore the evolving world of science and technology. Last December, Council leaders and trainers participated in a four-hour science workshop, presented in collaboration with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) at the Rivertown Science Center in Kenner. The workshop was conducted by three NASA scientists in the hope of encouraging science education among leaders who will in turn, expose Girl Scouts to career opportunities for women in science.

"Whenever I'm having a tough day, all I have to do is think of my best friend, Cady, floating around in outer space. I think to myself...if she can handle life up there, well then I can certainly handle life down here!" said Teresa.

Additional musical talent performing at the "Lift Up Your Voices" Girl Scout birthday event includes a stage choir recently formed of Girl Scouts from across southeast Louisiana who will be giving their premier performance on the 10th. Other groups of talented grown-up Girl Scouts will lead the audience via song and video on a journey of Girl Scouting through the decades. Guest speakers include Orleans Parish Civil Court Judge Carolyn Gill-Jefferson who will give a spiritual reflection.

All present day and former Girl Scouts along with friends and family are invited to attend the two-hour event, which begins promptly at 2 p.m. Doors open at 1 p.m.

Cost per seat is $6. To reserve your seat, contact the Girl Scout Council at (504) 733-8220 or email birthday@girlscoutssela.org. The Girl Scout Council of Southeast Louisiana serves the parishes of Jefferson, Lafourche, Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. Charles, St. James, St. John, St. Mary, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, Terrebonne, and Washington.
