Ida and Dactyl in Enhanced Color

Galileo's gravity-assisted course took it through the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter twice. It flew past asteroid 951 Gaspra in October 1991 - the first close flyby of an asteroid. In August 1993, Galileo flew past asteroid 243 Ida and discovered the first known moon orbiting an asteroid.
