Capturing a Whisper from Space
Topic: Communication
Grade Level: 5-8
Body: Saturn
Mission: DSN (Our Solar System)

Short Description: Participants learn how a worldwide system of antennas is used with NASA's interplanetary spacecraft. Participants construct a cardstock antenna to demonstrate how the radio waves would be used to communicate.

Cassini/Huygens Spacecraft 1/37th Scale Model
Grade Level: 5-8

Short Description: This is a 1/37th scale model of the Cassini/Huygens spacecraft. It needs only scissors and glue to create. This is for an experienced modeler. Can download the instructions and parts in Acrobat Reader software which is needed to read all "PDF" files.

Chandra X-Ray Observatory: Imaging Activity

Short Description: Students will use data collected from the Chandra x-Ray Observatory to calculate the average pixel intensity of x-ray emissions from a supernova remnant, order average pixel intensity levels into range levels and associate image colors to each level to create an image of a supernova remnant, and interpret a "false-color" image formed from real data and develop explanations as to why scientists employ computers to process and analyze astronomical data.

Chandra X-Ray Observatory: Stellar Spectra Classification

Short Description: Students will know that starlight is often broken up into component wave lengths, understand how stellar spectra are classified, and understand how stellar spectra are related to composition and temperature

Chandra X-Ray Observatory: #1 Electromagnetic Spectrum - Modeling the Spectrum
Grade Level: 9-12

Short Description: Students look at the pros and cons of using a logarithmic scale model versus a linear scale model of the electromagnetic spectrum

Chandra X-Ray Observatory: #10 Activities - X-ray Refutation and Elaboration
Grade Level: 9-12

Short Description: Students correct an essay about X-rays and research to expand on parts of the essay.

Chandra X-Ray Observatory: #11 Activities - To Build A Satellite
Grade Level: 9-12

Short Description: Students and teachers will access, discuss, and learn background information on the Chandra website so that they may build a model of the Chandra telescope and satellite.

Chandra X-Ray Observatory: #2-1a Stellar Evolution - Cosmic Connections
Grade Level: 9-12

Short Description: Cosmic Connections is a sequencing activity using the set of 24 images provided. The purpose of the activity is to have students apply their knowledge of stellar evolution in a format that allows flexibility.

Chandra X-Ray Observatory: #2-1b Stellar Evolution - Cosmic Webquest
Grade Level: 5-8

Short Description: This is a sequencing activity using the set of 24 images provided. The purpose of the activity is to have students research a set of images and apply the knowledge to sequence another set of images to show and describe stellar evolution.

Chandra X-Ray Observatory: #2-2 Stellar Evolution - Stellar Cycles
Grade Level: 9-12

Short Description: This is a performance task - an assessment tool to determine student understanding of stellar evolution. The Image Set is different than the image set used for the other 2 activities. Students will sequence the images and write brief descriptions.
