Exploring the Moon: Unit 3: The Future: #3 Lunar Biosphere
Grade Level: K-4, 5-8

Short Description: Students will build a biosphere that is a balanced, self enclosed living system able to run efficiently over a long period of time.

Finding the Distance to the Sun
Topic: Math
Grade Level: 9-12
Body: Sun

Short Description: The students will apply the concepts of vertical angles and ratios to calculate lengths and angles. Can they determine the distance to the sun?

Flexing Muscles and Moons
Grade Level: 5-8
Body: Jupiter, Europa

Short Description: Students measure the effect of gravitational flexing (which keeps Io and Europa's interior warm) by taking the temperature of some flexible rubber balls. They also calculate the force of gravity.

Focusing light with a lens
Grade Level: 5-8

Short Description: Using a lens, the student will observe the image of an object through a lens and will determine the magnification of that lens

Follow the Falling Meteorite
Topic: Math
Grade Level: K-4, 5-8
Body: Venus

Short Description: Participants demonstrate and experience the way remote objects or sites can be accurately located by triangulation.

Fundamentals of Lunar Exploration: The Search for Lunar Ice (Main Portal)
Topic: Modeling Solar System Objects
Grade Level: 5-8, 9-12

Short Description: Students design and build a mission and TopoBot rover to search for ice in the lunar polar regions.

Galaxy Hunter
Grade Level: 9-12

Short Description: This lesson reinforces students' understanding of simple random sampling using real data from the Hubble Deep Fields.

Gelatin Volcanoes
Topic: Planetary Surface Processes
Grade Level: 5-8
Body: Earth

Short Description: Participants develop an awareness of how magma moves inside volcanoes, what dikes look like underground, and why Hawaiian volcanoes have rift zones by watching as red food coloring is injected into gelatin.

Geologic Landforms of Mars
Topic: Landforms
Grade Level: 5-8
Body: Mars
Mission: Mars Recon Orbiter (Mars)

Short Description: Participants use aerial photos of the Martian surface to study landforms of Mars and interpret the geologic processes which formed them.

Geologic Landforms of Venus
Topic: Landforms
Grade Level: 5-8
Body: Venus
Mission: MESSENGER (Mercury)

Short Description: Participants are introduced to the remote sensing technique of radar imaging using aerial photos to study the geologic features of Venus.
